The vertical black stripes in this piece are not purely visual. They carry a signal — a sound encoded in their arrangement, readable by a camera.
This is an early proof of a technique that will appear throughout the Whiteout book: specific pages will contain patterns like these, and the reader’s phone, held over them, will hear what is inside.
The sounds are generated by an entity the reader will encounter elsewhere in the work. What the stripes encode is not yet finalised. What they demonstrate is that the book can hold more than text.
